DECHEMA – Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology e.V. is an interdisciplinary scientific society with more than 5,800 personal and institutional members (including about 500 SMEs), whose activities cover wide areas relevant to the process industries. DECHEMA is dedicated to the support of R&D progress, implementation and innovation realization in various fields of chemical engineering, environmental protection (esp. industrial water management) and biotechnology. DECHEMA has more than 25 years of experience in identifying and closing technological gaps, in facilitating communication between research, industry and the public sector and in supporting the market uptake of innovation. In 2008 DECHEMA was one of the initiators of the SusChem – WssTP cooperation on innovation in industrial water management.
Instituto de Soldadura e Qualidade – ISQ is a private non-profit making technological association with Public interest status with a turnover of 83M€ and more than 800 staff members. Founded in 1965, ISQ offers technical inspection, training and consultancy services, supported by research and development activities and by accredited laboratories. ISQ’s mission is to contribute to the constant improvement of industry and services, resulting in an expanded international presence, by collaborating with the state, regional councils and businesses with regard to the sharing and development of technology, new products and processes, structured management practices and quality control, hygiene and safety, energy conservation and environmental protection, and systematic maximization of human resources. The strategy of ISQ growth goes through an increasingly important and sustained presence in the world having offices, branches and affiliates in 20 countries. The large experience and know-how of ISQ staff, allows us to face the future challenges in the ceaseless search for new solutions towards sustainability. Energy department of ISQ has large experience in energy efficiency and renewable energies, due to its long history (more than 20 years) doing energy audits, consultancy and energy management in Energy-Intensive Industries and in large services buildings.
VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH (BFI) is with a staff of 140 people one of Europe’s leading private-sector institutes for applied research and development in the field of steel technology and connected branches. BFI is a non-profit, limited liability company in which Steel Institute VDEh is the sole shareholder. The main object of the Institute’s work is the optimization of steel production processes and its infrastructure. One of the key research aspects is the optimization of water and energy consumption. Through running industrial projects, personal contacts and presentations of the research results in scientific committees of German Steel Federation, BFI has direct contact to the stakeholders of the European metal processing industry. This way, demand oriented innovative solutions can be rapidly developed, disseminated and implemented in dialogue with the stakeholders. BFI also possesses long year experience in international research projects as coordinator and participant.
The SINTEF group is the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia, with 2200 employees. SINTEF is a non-commercial organization, and the profits of our contract research projects are invested in new research, scientific equipment and competence development. In the course of the past five years, we have invested NOK 500 million of our own funds in laboratories and scientific equipment. SINTEF Energy Research is a partner in the SINTEF group, and has 245 employees working within electrical and thermal energy. SINTEF does contract research for both industry and government in the national and international market. SINTEF has extensive project experience in design of thermal systems and components for a wide range of applications, such as offshore bottoming cycles, heat pumping and refrigeration systems, industrial heat recovery, and from the indoor climate and energy use in buildings.

Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) is a research and innovation centre operating in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) domain. Founded in 2000 by Compagnia di San Paolo and Politecnico di Torino, today ISMB relies on the technological and process competences of around 150 researchers working in close cooperation with companies, academia and public administration. ISMB plays an active role not only in devising innovative solutions, but also in their implementation and consequent developments. This approach represents a step forward with respect to technology transfer, and in this sense, the evolutionary lines of European research are taken into account. ISMB is organized in Research Areas focused on some core sectors of ICT: computing infrastructure based on technologies of cloud computing solutions and electromagnetic simulation (Advanced Computing & Electromagnetics), use of ICT as a strategic tool for the promotion of sustainable development (Innovation Development), mobile solutions and data management (Mobile Solutions), wireless systems for the effective delivery of Internet services under mobility (Multi-Layer Wireless Solutions), technologies and systems related to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (Navigation Technologies), wireless sensor networks and technologies enabling the paradigm of the Internet of Things (Pervasive Technologies), optical communications and optoelectronics (Applied Photonic).Since 2011 ISMB has extended its activities to process innovation, orienting its focus on priority themes of the European agenda. Such an evolution aims at exploiting excellences and results obtained by Research Areas into Strategic Programs that are interdisciplinary by nature. Smart Energy, Smart City and Smart Health are the strategic programs tackled by ISMB, representing the first step of a broader action aimed at high-value social projects. Consistently with process innovation goals, the Institute has developed a strong competence in new business models that are a necessary component for the economic sustainability of innovative solutions. Moreover, the Institute is involved in several industrial cooperation activities with both large enterprises and SMEs, as well as in various higher-education initiatives in partnership with academic institutions.
